Jay Surina has more than 25 years of executive leadership, finance, and investment experience across the energy, power, and nuclear sectors. Throughout his career, he has held senior leadership positions in both private equity-backed and publicly traded companies, with extensive expertise in capital raising, mergers and acquisitions, strategic planning, and operational growth.
Mr. Surina has served in executive roles at several leading energy companies, including Chief Executive Officer of Northwest Medical Isotopes, Chief Financial Officer of NuScale Power, Vice President of Corporate Finance at Boart Longyear, Vice President of Finance at Texas Genco, Vice President of Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions at Centrica North America/Direct Energy, and Vice President of Finance at Sithe Energies.
As Chief Financial Officer of NuScale Power from 2009 to 2021, Mr. Surina played a key role in the development and commercialization of the company’s small modular reactor technology. During his tenure, he led efforts to raise more than $1 billion of equity capital and U.S. Department of Energy funding, supporting NuScale’s growth from an early-stage startup with approximately 20 employees to a market-leading nuclear technology company with more than 400 employees. NuScale became a publicly traded company in 2022.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Surina led significant strategic and capital markets transactions. At Boart Longyear, he completed six acquisitions within a one-year period prior to the company’s initial public offering on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2007, which at the time was the largest IPO in the exchange’s history. At Texas Genco, he was a member of the management team that helped oversee the company following its acquisition by a consortium of private equity firms in 2005 and its subsequent sale to NRG Energy for approximately $5.8 billion in 2006.
Prior to his corporate leadership roles, Mr. Surina co-founded CornerStone Energy Advisors, an energy-focused consulting firm that advised clients on power generation asset acquisitions and industry deregulation initiatives. He also worked with Coopers & Lybrand Consulting on strategic and financial advisory engagements in the energy sector.
Before entering the private sector, Mr. Surina served as a nuclear-trained submarine officer in the United States Navy. He earned an M.B.A. from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with concentrations in Finance and Strategic Management and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy. Mr. Surina is a Professional Engineer and holds a nuclear engineering certification from the U.S. Navy.
