Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Supervisor

John Perkins serves as the Emergency Preparedness Supervisor at Plant Farley for Southern Nuclear. In this role, he provides leadership and oversight for the station’s emergency preparedness program, including emergency plan implementation, drill and exercise activities, emergency response organization readiness, regulatory compliance, and coordination with federal, state, and local response partners. He leads and supports Emergency Preparedness personnel while promoting program consistency, operational readiness, and a strong culture of continuous improvement. His work helps ensure the station remains prepared to protect the health and safety of the public and plant personnel.
Perkins began his nuclear industry career with Southern Nuclear in 2009 as a nuclear security officer, where he advanced through positions of increasing responsibility. In 2014, he joined Plant Farley’s Emergency Preparedness organization. Since that time, he has contributed to the development, maintenance, implementation, and evaluation of the station’s radiological emergency plan and supporting programs. His experience includes regulatory drills and exercises, emergency response training, program assessments, procedure development, personnel qualification, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders. Before joining Southern Nuclear, Perkins served eight years in the U.S. Navy as a rescue swimmer and aviation warfare specialist. That experience established a foundation in emergency response, teamwork, operational discipline, and leadership in high-consequence environments. He continues to apply those capabilities through volunteer service with a local fire department in his community.
Perkins holds a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in Emergency Management from Columbia Southern University. He also holds multiple Emergency Preparedness certifications through the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations and the State of Alabama, along with instructor certifications from Southern Nuclear and the Alabama Fire College. In addition, he maintains a range of fire and emergency medical services certifications.
